Constituent Parts, 2017

Samuel Freeman Gallery

Two-person exhibition of individual and collaborative projects by York Chang and Justin Cole, each working with distinct approaches to archival aesthetics and the production of historical counter-narratives . Over the course of seven weeks, the exhibition shifted and changed, incorporating performances, radio broadcasts, and the installation and removal of new works. Collaborations with other artists, journalists, and musicians proposed a new citizenship, in which dialogue and camaraderie were explored as building blocks in a struggle for a new democratic reality. The exhibition refused a single formation, with the legibility of the works based on the fluidity, overlap, and inter-dependency of the constituent parts over time.
