American Magic and Dread
This exhibition owes its title to a line in a Don Delillo novel that describes an entire mass media culture as morbidly transfixed on the visceral authenticity of the illusion of reality as on reality itself. These figurative paintings borrow from the tropes of snapshot photography with the light of overblown flashes and the haunting ephemeral traces of slow-shutter speed photography.
